This is a heartwarming story of devotion and love! In July of 2011, Matt Davis was in a motorcycle accident that left him in a coma with a severe traumatic brain injury. He was 22 and had been married for 7 months to Danielle before his accident. With only 10% chance of recovering, doctors suggested to Danielle that she remove him from life support and let him go. But Danielle wanted to give him more time to see if he improved. “We didn’t really have a chance to start our life together, I wasn’t going to give up,” she writes on their GoFundMe page.
He was discharged from hospital and into Danielle’s care, and she moved back into her mother’s house where she and her mother cared for him 24/7. Matt remained in a coma for 3 months. It was a difficult, challenging time for his new wife.
Then, one day, he woke up. “We noticed he was trying to talk, more like whisper and one day I put his hat in his hand, told him to put it on his head,” writes Danielle. “After telling him multiple times he gasps out, “I’m trying!” It was the greatest thing I’ve ever heard!”
What they soon discovered, though, was that Matt did not remember the last three years of his life. He didn’t remember that he had married Danielle or that his father had died two years before the accident.
However, since then, they have spent all their time together and he has fought to regain his speech and ability to walk with Danielle supporting him all the way. Although he doesn’t remember their courtship, he told media outlets, “I”m sure glad I married her.”
One thing is for sure, this couple’s devotion to each other has worked miracles!
