Locked behind the ominous black steel doors covered with skulls and crossbones in Northumberland, England, resides a garden of a different sort. The Poison Garden. This unique garden at Alnwick Castle grows around 100 infamous killer plants. From deadly nightshade to hemlock, the only way a plant can take root in this garden is if it is lethal to humans.
Created by the Duchess of Northumberland, this is one garden where you won’t want to stop and smell the flowers. Gardener Trevor Jones gives a tour of the unique garden, showing off the plants that you’ve likely only read about in Agatha Christie novels or other murder mysteries. Says Jones, “People are very intrigued by poisonous plants and often very worried when they come out because many of them are growing these plants at home.”
