A New Zealand adventurer and YouTuber on a cross Canada canoe trip unexpectedly ended up saving the life of a dog in Manitoba. Tom Hudson is a sailboat captain who began his cross country canoe trip recently when he came across a trapped dog in a Manitoba river.
Hudson heard a faint bark coming from the river bank and had actually passed the dog when he heard another muffled bark. He decided to paddle back to investigate and that’s when he spotted a dog half sunk in the muddy bank.
The dog, a Great Pyrenees, couldn’t move because she was trapped under a log. Half her body was submerged in the mud, and she couldn’t use her back legs to get out.
Hudson struggled to reach her, sinking knee-deep in the mud himself. Despite the difficulty, he managed to lift the log off her and pull her free from the mud before carrying her back to his canoe.
“It was a bit of a challenge,” Hudson noted. The dog remained silent as he paddled with her on his boat. He figured she had exhausted her voice from barking for a long time. After paddling a few hundred meters down the river, he spotted a dock and decided to pull over.

Hudson approached the home and discovered that the dog, indeed, lived there. Her name was Ivy, and she was 14 years old. Ivy’s family had been searching for her for days. Grateful and relieved, they immediately began tending to Ivy and invited Hudson to stay for dinner.
Ivy has made a lasting impression on Hudson’s travels, so much so that he will be naming his sailboat ‘Ivy’. For those dog lovers who might be worried, Ivy did get back on her feet and can walk again.
