Ancient Viking Rune That Was Just Decoded Has The Sweetest Message

Many people love a good riddle, but some are much more difficult to solve than others. This one stumped academics for hundreds of years…until one Ph.D. student figured it out!

University of Oslo Ph.D. candidate Jonas Nordby recently decoded a code, called jötunvillur.

Jonas used the stick below to help him decode the mysterious jötunvillur. This stick is dated from the 13th century and has the names of two men, Sigurd and Lavrans, who carved their names both in code and in standard runes.

So what is etched into this piece of bone that dates back to the 12th or 13th century and was found in Sigtuna, Sweden? “Kiss me” 🙂
