I was very moved when I learned about what this man and his late wife have done to help dogs with unhappy histories. In 2012, Thayne Hamilton was visited by Talk It Up TV, who came to visit his dog rescue, Grey Muzzle Rescue & Sanctuary on Orcas Island in Washington.
Thayne and his wife Christine started their rescue to help senior dogs who have been severely abused. Over a 10 year period, they took in the worst of the worst from all over the country, many of them on the verge of euthanasia, and provided the dogs a peaceful place they could call home. The dogs are free to roam on the 5-acre property and learn to become dogs again.
One of their rescue dogs was Lilla (Little Miss Stompy Feet), who spent her first 14 years living chained to a slab. She was in such bad shape when she was rescued that her legs were glued to her body. But she managed to get around with some help from Thayne and a wheelbarrow.
Tragedy struck in 2013, after Christine passed away from a terminal illness. Before she died, she made a tremendously loving gesture. Not wanting a big medical bill looming over Thayne that would mean he and the dogs would lose their home, she decided to choose to refuse medical resuscitation.
Before passing away, she asked Thayne to continue their rescue work as they had done so many years together. He has honored her wishes since then and currently has 16 dogs under his care.
