Boaters off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada had their leisurely boat ride turn into an adventure they are not soon to forget when an iceberg collapsed and caused a giant tidal wave to head directly towards them.
Wanda Stead and her husband, Rick, were admiring a huge iceberg floating in the Bay of Exploits when the iceberg began calving. After large chunks of ice fell into the water, the ocean began to swell and create enormous waves.
Wanda was filming at that very moment and in the video below you can hear her screaming to her husband “Run Rick. Go!”. Rick hit the gas and they motored out of there as fast as they could.
“I think my heart came up, and I swallowed it. I was petrified,” Wanda told CBC News. She added, “All I could see was this tidal wave coming toward us.”
Despite the terrifying experience, the couple continued to watch the iceberg break apart from a safer distance. Stead told CBC they shared the video as a caution to other boaters – don’t venture too close. “Accidents are unplanned events,” she said. “You never know with something that big … and people need to know.”
