Halloween has come and gone, but a real-life menace was discovered by two families in Canada when they reported finding razor blades in children’s Halloween candy.
Police in southwestern Ontario are warning parents and children to be vigilant of tampering after two families found what appeared to be razor blades hidden in candy bars that their children brought home after trick or treating.

One family living in the town of Thorold reported that their young child was indulging in a few treats when he “felt” something hard within the bar. The boy removed the item from his mouth and noticed it was a slender metallic item, which Niagara Regional Police Service said in a press release “resembled a razor from within a disposable shaving razor”.
In another case, which was reported on Monday, a child had gone had gone trick or treating in Ontario’s St. Catharines area and found a razor blade within on O’Henry bar.
Thankfully, neither of the children sustained any injury.

In both cases, police are investigating and cautioning parents to thoroughly inspect their children’s candy before allowing them to eat it. They advise to check to see if the candies have been tampered in any way.
- Check for ripped or loose wrappers,
- Check for punctures, pinholes in wrappers or boxes
- Check for discoloration on the box, indicating it may have once been opened.
- Discard loose candy or any confections that aren’t wrapped or are homemade, unless you’re certain of the origins of the product.
- Check to see if there’s anything that obviously doesn’t belong: items that are different colors, larger or smaller than the rest of the treats inside the package, lumps or bulges under the wrappers.
- Check the expiry date.
- When in doubt, throw it out.
