When Police Constable Stu Ockwell and his partner responded to the call of an elderly couple they feared the worst. Instead what they found was two seniors who were desperately lonely. Doris Thompson, 95, and her husband, Fred, called 999 (the UK version of 911) saying they needed help.
GMP Middleton tweeted: “Just dealt with a 95 year old couple who called the Police as they were lonely. What else could we do but make them a brew and have a chat.”
It turns out the seniors were not ill but really needed someone to talk to. PC Stu and his colleague weren’t about to disappoint them. Stu put on a pot of tea and sat down with the couple and talked for half an hour.
Fred says he and his wife couldn’t be more pleased or grateful for the officers’ support. “Sometimes you can be a bit isolated as you get older, but they made me feel at home,” explains Fred.
It seems a small gesture, but what these officers did meant the world to Fred and Doris. This is an important reminder to try and spend more time with the seniors you know.
