A poor emaciated puppy was in trouble in more ways than one after people were calling for her to be “caught and destroyed in case she was diseased”.
The dog, clearly suffering from mange, was wandering the streets of Bulgaria and in danger of being killed when Rudozem Street Dog Rescue (RSDR) was notified out about her.
The rescue grew worried about her safety and decided to search for her.
“We know the abuse that even a healthy looking street dog will suffer, getting kicked, chased off and having things thrown at them, so we could imagine what might be happening to this poor dog,” said Diane Rowles, one of the founders of RSDR on Facebook.
Diane and Tony, also from RSDR, drove to the town where she was living and eventually found her. Tony called out to her and she immediately came over to him.
“She was cowering as she approached but she was just so desperate for contact. She has to be one of the saddest cases we have seen,” wrote Rowles.
“She was so thin and had no hair. She was covered in fleas and tick, her ear was torn and her skin was so sore. It also appeared as if a front leg had been broken and healed badly.”
Over the next few days they began to treat her, giving her pain meds, antibiotics, worm medications and baths for the demodex mange and getting rid of the nasty ticks covering her body.
“The poor girl had suffered so much and yet was still so loving and trusting.”
Her front legs have a deformity that may have been due to malnutrition or congenital. But she got splints to help straighten them.
Slowly, her hair began growing back.
It took a while, but she began to look like a healthy dog again. Until…
She is stunning!
“She truly is a beautiful girl,” Rowles says.
Amazingly, after 18 months with RSDR, Khaleesi is still waiting for a forever home!
Here’s a recent video of Khaleesi just before her walk on January 23, 2016.
Khaleesi is available at the shelter to the UK, Netherlands and Belgium, where the rescue has affiliate rescues.
You can find out more about Khaleesi and the other dogs available at the Rudozem Street Dog Rescue (RSDR) website.
