John and Lilly are about to get married. The big day has all the makings of a storybook wedding – except for one thing. The bride is only 11 years old.
Did you know that about 15 million girls under 18 will be married this year – their right to a childhood stripped away as they are thrown into lives they did not choose for themselves?
Produced by UNICEF and Bridal Musings, this video aims to put a spotlight on the grim reality of child brides and raise awareness of the global issue.
“The sad truth is that a girl who is married as a child is more likely to be out of school, experience domestic violence, and become infected with HIV/AIDS,” says Bridal Musings and UNICEF. “She is more likely to have children when she herself is still a child, and is far more likely to die due to complications during pregnancy and childbirth.”
