A Golden Retriever brought home an unexpected house guest that surprised her family and saved a life. Kerry McKinnon says she “burst out laughing” when she discovered a baby koala snuggling on top of her dog Asha.
The Australian hadn’t even fully woken up when her husband called her to come downstairs. That’s when she saw the tiny marsupial clinging to Asha’s back.
“I just burst out laughing. Poor Asha didn’t know what to think, she just kept looking at me with such a confused look,” McKinnon told Metro UK.
McKinnon believes the koala was looking for some place warm and safe and Asha, who was sleeping on the porch, was it. Temperatures in Victoria, Australia, can fall to 5C at night this time of year and given how cold it was outside the koala would likely not have survived the night. Not to mention the predators that prowl at night.
The McKinnons wrapped the joey in a blanket and took it to a vet , but not without a bit of protest. McKinnon says the koala hissed and didn’t want to leave Asha’s back.
The koala is now with a wildlife rehabilitator and will be cared for until it can be released back into the wild.
