Barbie-Q wasn’t about to take any nonsense from a black bear that came by her home and scared her fellow barn animals in the pen. The mini micro pig, who lives on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, surprised her family recently after she was caught on surveillance cameras protecting her animal friends from the bear.
Owner Crystal Walls and her husband were away at the time with their four dogs. The dogs are usually the ones protecting the animals but Barbie-Q stepped into the role when the bear broke into the pen and tried to get close to the other animals.
In the video, Barbie-Q attempts to move the animals into their pen for safety and charges at them to keep them a safe distance away from the bear. She then charges at the bear after he gets too close to her and the other animals!
The Walls’ house-sitter called them and told them their fence had been breached so they raced home and found all the animals were okay. But when they watched their security footage they were shocked at what they saw.
“Lo and behold, there was our little mini pig Barbie-Q fighting off a bear,” Walls said on CBC’s All Points West radio show.
Walls said it was pretty unbelievable to see Barbie-Q be so heroic. The pig is actually quite shy and is terrified of the goats! Walls said Barbie-Q repeatedly charged the bear who decided to leave about 30 minutes later.
“He definitely did not put up a fight to Barbie. He got out of her way,” said Walls.
Walls later told CBC that Barbie-Q was raised as a pet for her first three years before moving outside. Barbie-Q did get a reward for her heroics – a bowl of fruit salad and lots of belly rubs.
