“The Star-Spangled Banner” is the beloved national anthem of the United States of America. Its words are especially important to the brave people who have served and are serving in the armed services. So, when Virginia Tech basketball coach Buzz Williams noticed that some of his players weren’t giving it the respect it was due, he thought he would give his players a lesson.
He brought them on the court and spoke about the importance of standing at attention, to honor those that gave up their freedom so others could.
“These guys, when they were your age, interrupted their life, they paused their education, they changed their career, and they gave their life for those chairs,” Williams says to his team. “So when the anthem is played, we’re going to stand like grown men and we’re going to honor men like this, that gave their life, so we can have a chair to sit in.”
His impassioned speech has since gone viral, with many applauding the coach’s lesson that not only is one for his athletes but speaks to everyone about the importance of respect for others.
