You can never take the mother out of a dog as this heartwarming story demonstrates. When a pair of rescue puppies named Kari and Hannah arrived from a rescue to temporarily stay at Barker’s Pet Motel and Grooming, the staff fell in love with them and so did one of their temporary guests.
An Australian shepherd cross named Maggie was caught on surveillance cameras breaking out of her kennel and visiting the puppies to comfort them.
“We see a lot of adorable things here at Barkers but this story takes the cake…” Barker’s Pet Motel of Alberta, Canada writes on Facebook.
Maggie must have heard the puppies crying, because she let herself out of her kennel and lay next to theirs.
Kari and Hannah are from Alberta Rescue Crew Society (AARCS) and being looked after at Barker’s, which often boards dogs for rescues when they don’t have enough foster homes available. In this instance, the two puppies got comfort from another rescue dog!
Maggie was recently adopted from the Edmonton Humane Society and had her own puppies who had been weaned and taken away from her around 2 weeks ago. She was boarding with Barker’s for a few days while her new parents were away.
Sandy Alred, the owner of Barker’s, told CBC News that the puppies and Maggie were settled in for the evening. While she was out at dinner she used her phone to check the kennel’s surveillance cameras and that’s when she noticed Maggie pacing outside of the puppies’ enclosure. She was pawing and licking the puppies through the gate.
Sandy returned to the kennel and was greeted by Maggie, who lead her right back to the puppies. Sandy decided to put the would-be mama in with the puppies and “all three of them were so happy”.
Sandy watched as Maggie nuzzled and comforted the puppies. The trio cuddled together for the night. The foster mom got to spend that special night with the pups, and the following day her parents returned to pick her up. “They think they have a pretty special dog on their hands,” said Sandy of Maggie’s parents when they learned what she had done.

The puppies are currently being doted on by staff and are taken home for the evenings so they have a home environment at night. The two are available for adoption through AARCS.
