Abichan (@abychan12 on TikTok) loves walking in nature with her dogs, Polar and Calvin, near her home in Madre de Dios, Peru. Wandering through the lowland jungle, she enjoys the beautiful scenery and admires the butterflies while her dogs explore. Sometimes, the butterflies seem to admire them in return—more specifically, Polar. There’s just something about his shiny white fur that attracts Monarch butterflies to him.
So when they are on their walks, something magical happens. You can watch the butterflies “greet” Polar here:

The delicate winged insects swarm around Polar and cling to his back:

While Polar is usually more interested in digging around in the water than paying attention to his fluttering visitors, he sometimes shakes them off when they become too much.

Interestingly, it seems to be his white fur that draws them. One viewer pointed out that Monarchs are particularly attracted to white. TikTok user @karlysol3 (Karly Sol) commented, “Butterflies perch on white surfaces. If you ever go to see Monarch butterflies in Michoacán [Mexico], wear white, and you’ll see.”

Abichan agreed, replying, “You’re very right; it’s because of his white fur. Not a single insect landed on my other dog.”
She thinks this makes Polar a little special and now affectionately refers to him as “Polar, guardian of the butterflies.”
