Dog Stolen From Yukon Reunited With Family After 3,000-Mile Journey to Arizona

Alyce Johnson had an emotional reunion with her dog, Midnight, after the 4-year-old Pit Bull mix was kidnapped and found thousands of miles away. Midnight was abducted near the Alaska-Yukon border by a stranger in late September.

Alyce and her family searched everywhere for Midnight but feared the worst—that she may have fallen prey to a pack of wolves spotted in Burwash Landing over the summer. So, imagine Alyce’s shock when, 10 days later at 4 a.m., she received a call from Manzanita Animal Hospital in Kingman, Arizona, nearly 3,000 miles (5,000 km) away, informing her that they had found Midnight!

It turned out that a man had dropped Midnight off at a dog camp and training facility in Phoenix, Arizona, but never returned for her. Realizing she had been abandoned, the camp brought Midnight to the animal hospital, where they scanned her for a microchip and located Alyce. The family quickly arranged for a transport service to bring Midnight to the Washington State/British Columbia border in Blaine, Washington, for the reunion.

Both Alyce and Midnight were overjoyed to see each other again.

Alyce told Global News that the whole situation was very bizarre, but she was thankful the abductor hadn’t abandoned Midnight on the side of the road. Thankfully, Midnight was in good health. Alyce suspects that the man must have smuggled Midnight across the border, as there are strict new regulations for dogs entering the United States from Canada.

As to why the man dumped Midnight, Alyce figures that Midnight’s quirks may have led to the change of heart. “She has quirks like most dogs. I think she probably became loud and he didn’t want her anymore,” she said. Midnight has a habit of howling and barking if she’s left in the car.  The other thing that saved Midnight was her chip. “It was a chip that saved her. Otherwise, we would never know if it was the wolves that got her,” Alyce told the Yukon News.

Midnight was flown back to the Yukon on October 7, where she was greeted by her entire family and friends who cheered her safe return.
