Not making your bed in the morning may help keep you healthy, according to researchers.
It’s better for your health to not make your bed in the morning. Why? Researchers at Kingston University believe that unmade beds are unappealing to house dust mites, the microscopic critters that are thought to cause asthma and other allergies.
As many of us know (but try not to think about), dust mites are everywhere. They feed on the scales of human skin. Approximately 1.5 million of them are hang out with you every night when you go to sleep. That’s because dust mites love warm, moist environments, like the one they get when someone sleeps in the bed. Plus they have lots of skin scales to feed on. On the flip side, when you get up and leave your bed unmade, this creates a dry condition that dust mites dislike and can’t survive in.
“Something as simple as leaving a bed unmade during the day can remove moisture from the sheets and mattress so the mites will dehydrate and eventually die,” researcher Dr. Stephen Pretiove told BBC.
The research has the potential to help home designers build more healthy building features through heating and insulation.
Of course, nothing is conclusive just yet. Another scientist points out that most homes are humid enough for dust mites to continue to thrive, so one unmade bed is unlikely to have much of an impact. Still, I love having a new excuse for why my bed isn’t made!
