Back in 1967, Sally Field was offered a starring role in a television show that sounded incredibly silly – the Flying Nun. The premise of the show was that Sister Bertrille was such a slight person that her headdress would blow her into air so that she could fly. Oh, and she would also use her flying “skill” to help solve mysteries.
Field ended up accepting the role after her stepfather convinced her to not pass up work so early in her career. The show became an unexpected hit and lasted three seasons despite not being popular with critics. After it ended, she was typecast for a time, but eventually she began to shift to dramatic roles. Twelve years later, Sally Field would star in Norma Rae, a role that earned her an Oscar.
