A stray Pit Bull, freezing outside, showed up at a stranger’s home, begging to be let in. The dog had been wandering the streets of St. Louis last week when temperatures were dangerously cold. Gateway Pet Guardians (GPG) had been alerted about a dog struggling in the frigid weather. They wrote on Instagram, “He was roaming our service area during the harshest days of the year, too scared to approach anyone.” A few hours later, the dog had sought out shelter for himself, showing up at a family’s back door desperately whining to be let in, “pleading for warmth and shelter from the bitter cold.”

Gateway Pet Guardians explained that the teenage girls at home, moved by his desperate cries, called their mom to ask how to help him. With their mother’s permission, they let the dog – now named Adobe – into their garage and then reached out to GPG. They gave him food and water, and shortly after, GPG arrived to pick Adobe up.
“We have never seen a dog so visibly shaken by the cold,” the rescue organization said, describing how his paws were swollen, likely close to frostbite, and how he was shivering uncontrollably. Given the frigid temperatures, they believe Adobe would not have survived if he had remained outdoors. Once inside and out of the cold, Adobe was visibly grateful to be warm, happy, and safe, always seeking attention and cuddles.
Adobe was very clean and wearing a nice harness and so initially Gateway Pets thought he was lost. However, with no microchip and no response to their alerts, Adobe will soon be available for foster or adoption. They wrote, “Being a new intake, we’re letting him decompress before we learn more about him. What we do know is that he’s an absolute love bug with the biggest, most charming head & an irresistibly handsome face that melts your heart.”
They added, “Adobe is a true survivor, & we would love to see him settle into a foster home where he can continue to heal & thrive. If you’re looking to open your heart & home to a dog in need, Adobe is ready to share all the love (& drool) he has to offer! Fill out a foster application online at gatewaypets.org”
It’s so fortunate that Adobe picked the right home to ask for help!
