Dogs in the food aisle? A supermarket in Italy has made it a reality, and introduced dog-friendly shopping carts for shoppers. Pet parents can bring their dogs inside to go grocery shopping rather than leaving them outside.

Gianfranco Galantini, owner of the Unes store in the city of Luino, came up with the idea after he noticed many of his customers were rushing through their shopping because the left their dogs outside.
Feeling they would be less in a hurry if they could bring their dogs inside with them, he came up with the idea of adapting a few of the shopping carts so dogs could sit in them.
The carts now have a partition to divide food and dog and there is a solid bottom so that the dog can sit or stand up in the cart.
“The owners of small dogs can avoid leaving them out and take all the time necessary to make their purchases with peace of mind,” Galantini told La Repubblica.
(It should be noted that in Italy small dogs are allowed to go inside stores as long as they are under control.)
Galantini added that the carts are cleaned after each use. So far, the dogs haven’t caused any problem, with exception of one who barked when he was put in the cart for the first time, but calmed down immediately.
Galantini says the initiative is already popular with his customers and with Unes central management who have asked him about the initiative, and may unroll trial runs at other stores in the chain.
