Animal rescuer Kristin Erwin wasn’t expecting to save a dog just before Christmas. But when she saw a little dog running along a busy road, looking “lost and confused,” she immediately stopped to help. However, the small canine was reluctant to be caught.
“I tried to get him to trust me, but he wasn’t interested,” Kristin, who runs Streethearts Project, wrote on TikTok. She tried to lure the dog over by dropping her keys to get his attention, but without food, he wasn’t interested in approaching her. “I had to give up and leave, but then I saw him again two days later. This time, I had food with me.”
Using a dog trap, ribeye steak, and chicken McNuggets, Kristin camped out, hoping to catch him. You can watch Eggnog’s rescue in the video below:
@streetheartstx We spotted this little guy running along a busy road. He looked lost and confused. I tried to get him to trust me, but he wasn’t interested. I had to give up and leave, but then I saw him again two days later. This time I had food packed with me. Once we got him home, he was still trembling, but he let me handle him and pet him. We will give him time to see we’re good people. Streetheartsproject.com

Kristin learned that Eggnog had been on the streets for five days and was likely dumped by his family. His first few days off the street were spent adjusting to his new home environment.
“He was so scared. His trembles broke me,” Kristin wrote about Eggnog’s initial reaction. But soon, he began to warm up to her.
On the fourth day, he was brave enough to approach Kristin for attention and wagged his tail! He started to seek her out and follow her around the house. Kristin said, “It started off with scared shakes, then slowly progressed into tail wags and spurts of playfulness!”

Kristin took Eggnog to the vet, where she learned he’s around 5 to 6 years old. He did not have a microchip, so they had him chipped and vaccinated. “Unfortunately, he tested positive for heartworms, so we will be getting him treatment (estimated at $400) after his neuter,” Kristin wrote. It appears that the funds have been raised but if you’d like to help Streethearts Project with Eggnog’s vetting and other costs, visit their website.
Even though Eggnog will need heartworm treatment, just seeing how much his demeanor has changed in a few days makes us hopeful for his future.
