When I think of sculpture I usually think of the beautiful classical marble or stone artworks that are in many museums. One sculptural form is equally beautiful but only lasts for a short time before it melts away. Ice sculptures. Made from ice, the blocks of frozen water are carved into all shapes and forms by artisans across the globe.

Every winter, there are many ice sculpting competitions and exhibitions where artisans set to work to carve something spectacular from ice.

People use chisels, grinders, chainsaws to carve the ice into beautiful shapes. The challenge in ice sculpting is to avoid cracking the ice and to adjust your work to the varying temperatures of the ice. The temperature of the environment also affects how quickly the piece must be completed to avoid the effects of melting.
