“I can’t even believe a place like this really exists. It was even better than I thought it was going to be.” That’s what Rachel says when she visited Fox Village at Mt. Zao in Japan with some friends. In the video below, she takes the viewer on a tour and says, “It was the most incredible place I’ve been in my life! I highly, highly recommend this for anyone visiting Japan.”
The sanctuary contains six different species of foxes. Opened in 1990, Zao Kitsune Mura also houses various fox shrines, highlighting the animal’s mythical status in Japan. The fox is a sacred animal in Japan, where in mythology it is believed to be a shape shifter.
Visitors can get quite close to the animals, which have free reign of the sanctuary, however, it’s not recommended that you try and pet the foxes.
