Injured Dog Expects Rescuers To Leave Like Everyone Else But Is Overwhelmed By Love

A property owner in North City, St. Louis, evicted their tenants and discovered a “petite little man” left behind. That little man was Gabe, a malnourished Pit Bull in need of help. The property owner called Stray Rescue of St. Louis, explaining, “He’s skinny and won’t get up. I fed him and left the back door open so he could get shelter. Can you come get him?”

When Donna and her team arrived, they found Gabe sitting behind the door. He didn’t move when they entered, though he glanced up, seemingly expecting them to leave. Donna gently approached with some food, and after some coaxing and a few Vienna sausages, Gabe finally stood. However, they noticed he couldn’t put any weight on his back leg.

Despite his injuries, Gabe remained friendly and calm, clearly eager to leave with his rescuers. When he struggled to manage the stairs, Donna scooped him up and carried him to their Jeep. During the “freedom ride,” Gabe gazed at them with sweet eyes before drifting off to sleep.

At the shelter, X-rays revealed that Gabe had a broken pelvis and would need a femoral head ostectomy (FHO), a surgery to restore his hip and relieve his pain. As shown in the video, Gabe quickly captured the hearts of his rescuers. “He is an absolute love,” Stray Rescue of St. Louis shared. “Gabe, you will never be abandoned again. You’ll never feel fear or loneliness. We absolutely adore you.”
