An increasing number of public spaces are becoming pet-friendly and this is great news for dog owners that want to go shopping with their dogs!
Whereas many European countries have allowed dogs into stores, malls, restaurants and other public spaces for years, pet-friendly spaces have been less embraced in North America. So it may come as a bit of surprise that some of the larger non-pet-related retailers in the U.S. do let dogs into their stores!
Note: most stores have an open door policy, but if you’re unsure about a business, it’s best to call ahead and ask. Many stores and chains do leave it up to the individual managers as to whether or not to allow dogs inside, so it is a privilege not a right (unless you have a service dog). Also, unfortunately any store that sells food items are not allowed to admit pets due to health regulations.
It goes without saying that your dog must be well-mannered and on leash and some stores may have size restrictions (e.g. only dogs who can be carried in your arms can come in).
Here’s a list of chain stores in the US (and in some cases, Canada) that do allow you to bring your four-legged friend to shop with you.
