Mariah Carey has just released a new video of perennial Christmas favorite “All I Want For Christmas Is You” to celebrate the 25th anniversary of her Merry Christmas album. Dubbed the “Make My Wish Come True Edition” version, Carey’s tune is one of the tracks on a reissue of her popular album, which includes several rare remixes, a new version of “Sugar Plum Fairy” and some previously-unreleased live tracks from a 1994 performance of Carey’s at New York City’s St. John the Divine cathedral.
The fun video is set in a winter wonderland and Carey’s adorable 8-year-old twins Monroe and Moroccan make an appearance too, dancing alongside their mom. It’s very different from the original video, but that was intentional.
“We wanted to make a modern classic, and that’s kind of been the theme with this song from the beginning…So it’s kind of the opposite of the original video,” Mariah said in a live YouTube Q&A just before the video’s premiere.

Reflecting back on the success of her song, Carey told Variety that “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is “one of my greatest achievements.” It also was a “happy accident.” In Amazon Music’s recent documentary “Mariah Carey is Christmas: The Story of ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’” the singer Carey revealed she started writing the song while watching a Christmas classic. “Actually, I put on [the movie] ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ downstairs. You could hear it throughout the house,” Carey said. She began playing notes on an old Casio keyboard and came up with the melody and chord progression, which she recorded on a mini tape recorder.
“It was done very quickly and kind of came out organically, which the best songs do,” Carey said in the documentary.
Carey’s Merry Christmas reissue will boast several rare remixes, a new version of “Sugar Plum Fairy” and a selection of previously-unreleased live tracks from Carey’s 1994 performance at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City.
Carey has done several versions of “All I Want For Christmas Is You” including a duet with Justin Bieber in 2011. You can view the SuperFestive/Shazam version below.
