If there is any one favorite goodie that people associate with Easter, it’s hot cross buns.
In the video below, Mary Berry shares her tips for making the tastiest buns. The well-known cookbook author and former host of Great British Bake-Off assures everyone that the recipe is worth a try. Berry also shares some helpful tips. For instance, through trial and error she’s learned that a double rising of the dough is a key element in making the buns “open” and airy.

Ingredients
500g or 4 cups plus 1 tbsp of strong white flour, put aside little extra for dusting
75g or 2/3 cup of caster sugar (superfine sugar or another fine sugar, if you can’t find caster)
2 tsp mixed spice powder
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 lemon, finely grated zest only
10g / 1/4 oz salt
10g / 1/4 oz fast-action dried yeast
40g / 1 1/2 oz butter
300ml or 1 1/4 cup / 10fl oz milk
1 egg, beaten
200g / 7oz sultanas
50g / 1 3/4 oz finely chopped mixed candied peel
oil, for greasing
For the topping:
75g or 2/3 cup/ 2 3/4 oz plain flour
2 tbsp golden syrup, for glazing
