The Paso Fino is a naturally gaited light horse breed and is prized for their smooth, natural, four-beat, lateral ambling gait. One man, Nicolas Jaramillo, raises what many consider the best Paso Fino horses in Colombia on in his farm Criadero Santa Isabel.
In the video below, several of his horses show off their spectacular four-beat gaits. The video also features the world’s fastest Paso Fino horse – Paz de Sueño – with an incredible gait of 800 beats per minute!
According to Wikipedia, in Colombia, some related native horses perform a slightly different, unevenly timed diagonal four-beat gait, known as the trocha, which is similar to the fox trot, and very smooth.
In Colombia the “trocha” has evolved, becoming a separate genealogical line from paso fino. It is inherited in a manner similar to the lateral ambling gaits of the purebred Paso Fino. Trocha rivals in popularity with paso fino in Colombia, but crossbreeding is avoided.
Here’s another video of Paz de Sueño and his amazing gait!
It’s mesmerizing to watch these horses perform! Share these paso fino horses with your friends and family.
