Rescuer Saves Most ‘Unique’ Dog He Has Ever Met

Recently, Lee Asher was on one of his rescue missions when he met a dog named Carter. He was greeting the recent arrivals—dogs transported from animal shelters to his animal sanctuary and rescue, The Asher House. Among the rescues was Carter. “I’ve never met a dog as unique as Carter in my life,” Asher said.

Carter is a Central Asian Shepherd Dog, also known as the Alabai or Turkmen Wolfhound. As you will see, Carter has made a strong impression on Lee, who is still getting to know the dog and his unusual characteristics.

Traditionally a livestock guardian dog from Türkiye, the breed is known for its independence, strong will, and aloofness. As Lee mentions in the video, these dogs are best suited for experienced handlers. Carter is very relaxed and playful with Lee, but Lee notes that Carter is not friendly with other staff members. “I’ve never seen a dog where it’s so hard to build up trust,” he said, adding that the dog possesses a whole other level of strength and protectiveness.

Lee also thanked Top of The Hill Dog Rescue—a group that specializes in rescuing unique and powerful dog breeds—as well as West Coast Cane Corso Rescue for their efforts.
