Workers at a mechanic shop in Houston got a surprise when they opened up their shop on Monday morning. There huddled in the corner was a dirty and wet Basset Hound surrounded by a litter of newborn puppies. There had been storms all weekend and the stray dog must have snuck into their store for shelter and given birth.
They began calling animal rescues for help and that’s when the mama dog came to the attention of Caitie Evers of Caitie’s Foster Fam. She wrote on TikTok, “I was at school teaching my morning class when I got a message about a stray Basset giving birth at a shop over the weekend. When they came in this morning, they saw her with newborn puppies and reached out to rescues for help. The shop was just around the corner from my campus, so I went and scooped them up.”

It’ll be an uphill battle for these newborns since they were born in unsafe conditions and are covered in fleas, too. But they’re all safe now, and I’ll do my best. The mama was in “horrific condition” Caitie said. The dog was covered in dirt and fleas and so hungry. “She had 11 babies and 3 were no longer alive when the shop workers found them all.”

“Mama girl is the absolute sweetest, and she really worked hard to save her puppies,” Caitie added. Once Caitie got the family home she decided to wash them right away because fleas are dangerous for puppies.

Caitie named the mama and her puppies after cars. She chose the name Bentley for the mom and Rover, Jaguar, Porsche, Audi, Mustang, Lincoln and Ford for all her babies. Caitie said, “It’s never easy to see dogs discarded like nothing. Having to give birth on the streets all alone. Searching for anywhere that felt safe enough to care for her newborns while in labor. My heart breaks for what this mama went through.”

She continued, “But she’s safe now. And I’m here to help her with her babies. To help her relax and get to be a dog. I can’t wait to see her truly happy and healthy. And to never have to care for babies again.”
Over the next few months, Caitie made sure that Bentley and all the puppies got all the love they needed. Bentley felt she could trust Caitie with her babies and that gave her a chance to “learn to be a pup herself.”

After three months, “[M]ama finally got time to herself,” Caitie said in a TikTok. All of the pups found forever families and Bentley did too! She’s got a wonderful home and a basset hound sister! Caitie said, “Now, she spends her days with unlimited love and snuggles.” It’s the most wonderful transformation!
