Man With Cerebral Palsy Created Stunning Art With Typewriter

Paul Smith possessed an amazing talent. He lived with spastic cerebral palsy, a disability that impeded his speech & mobility. But he taught himself to become a master artist using a typewriter as his artist’s tool.

Paul lived at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Roseburg, Oregon, for years and created his artworks using his left hand to steady his right one. Since he couldn’t press two keys on the typewriter at the same time, he almost always locked the shift key down and made his pictures using the symbols at the top of the number keys.

Over the decades he developed techniques to create shadings, colors, and textures that made his work resemble pencil or charcoal drawings.
