Kasey Simmons tries to go out of his way to make people happy. But recently, he was the one made happy when someone unexpectedly left him a $500 dollar tip on a 0.37 cent purchase for a small gesture of kindness that he had made to a stranger the day before.
The 32-year-old waiter who works at Applebee’s in Dallas, Texas recounts that one day a woman ordered some flavored water. The 37 cent item is the cheapest thing on the menu. However, she left a $500 tip along with a napkin explaining why, and that reason is so heartwarming.
Kasey had been at the supermarket the day before when he saw a woman who looked a bit sad, WFAA reports.
While the other shoppers ignored her, Kasey went over to cheer her up and offered to pay for her shopping. “‘It was only $17, but it’s not about the money – it’s about showing someone you care,’ he said.
Kasey learned from the napkin letter that that the woman was sad because it was the third anniversary of her husband’s death. The tip giver was the woman’s daughter.
“On one of the most depressing days of the year, you made my mother’s day wonderful,” it said on the napkin. “You insisted on paying. Told her she is a very beautiful woman. I have not seen this woman smile this much since dad died.”
Although Kasey did not learn the mother’s name, he does know that he made a difference to her on that day.
