Audray Luck of North Georgia works steadily every day to help the stray dogs in her community. It’s difficult as there is no animal shelter in area and many dogs are abandoned and left to survive on their own. But on this particular day she was able to help two feral puppies who wandered onto the road while she was driving home.
They immediately trusted Audray so she was able to pick them up, pop them into her car and begin to nurse them back to health. Not only were they covered in ticks, they were pretty skinny. Fido and Finlay got their baths, food, and slept soundly on their first night before heading to their foster family and then on to Big Lake Humane Society, who will help the puppies find forever families.
After Fido and Finlay were safely taken care of Audray drove back to the woods to check on the pack of strays that she had seen earlier. “We’re working on happy endings for the rest of their pack as well. Fido and Finley were born outdoors, to a blind, crippled, mother dog. Three of their siblings died shortly after birth. Finding them on the road that day pushed me to look into their situation again,” she wrote on her Instagram page Rescue With Me.
She added that she has been working with this pack of dogs for many months. “I set up feeding stations, pulled over multiple times when I saw them running on the road and tried my best to get them to approach. They never did. Then finally I found who had been feeding them. I made contact and offered assistance with food, vet bills and to bring them to get spayed and neutered.”
“These dogs were abandoned years ago when their owner moved away. None of them have ever lived indoors, and they have had multiple litters born in the wild. We do not have an animal shelter or animal control in my county, and I see this every. single. day.”
But Audray, like every other dog rescue in North America right now, is overwhelmed with the number of dogs who need help. “As a rescue, I have a duty to these dogs, and to my community. But if I am unsustainable, I will fail. Right now, I have 44 puppies and multiple adult dogs filling up my fosters homes. We are positively bursting with dogs, and we need space and money to afford their food and vet bills.”
Although facing significant resource challenges, Audray said she will never leave an animal behind and she rescued Fido and Finlay’s mother, Lady Pinecone, shortly after rescuing them. Short on fosters, she was able to find a friend who stepped forward to help Lady. “Pinecone still has a long road to recovery, she has Anaplasmosis, swollen lymph nodes and may have to get her eyes removed,” she said. But at least Lady will no longer have unwanted puppies and will get the vet care she so desperately needs. And not only that, her fosters “failed” and Pinecone will be with them forever.
Thanks to Audray’s dedication, and the dedication of her foster network, dogs like Fido, Finlay, and Lady Pinecone have a positive future to look forward to.
