While taking her kid to school the other day, Kristin spotted “a face pop out of the tall grass off the side of the road.” It was a puppy in the ditch stuck out in hot Texas sun. Luckily for the dog, Kristin is a dog rescuer and founder of StreetHeartsTX. Kristin immediately stopped the car because the puppy “looked hot and I was worried she was hurt.”
Kristin gently called for the Labrador to come over to her because she was worried the dog might go further into the woods. The puppy was slow to come out but her tail was wagging the whole time Kristin called to her. “She took a little coaxing but eventually came cowering over,” Kristin wrote on TikTok. “She was scared but so sweet.”
As soon as the puppy got a bit of attention she was okay and wasn’t as nervous and let Kristin put her in the car. Kristin’s hunch was right – the dog was very hot and she was hurt (she had a slice under her armpit, maybe from getting hung up on a fence). The puppy must have been so relieved to be somewhere safe and cool because she fell right to sleep in the air-conditioned car.
Kristin called the dog Maddie. Maddie is so submissive she just pancakes instead of walks so Kristin says she has to carry the dog everywhere right now. After a visit to the vet the next day Kristin learned that Maddie has hookworms. She got treated for fleas and given a rabies vaccine and some antibiotics for her cut, which they hope might heal up on its own (otherwise it will get stitched up).
Although Maddie is timid around their other dogs and cat, she has already snuck up on the couch when no one was looking and Kristin is letting Maddie adjust at her own pace. Kristin said, “I just love her already.” StreetHeartsTX does a wonderful job rescuing and fostering homeless dogs. We just know that Maddie will not only be well looked after, we’re certain she will find a loving home.
